Mayer team needs to tighten up
A mismatch is pairing Gianandrea Noseda with Michael Franti. Franti, always full of love and hope, tried hard to warm up the JVL crowd along with his crew, who mostly consisted of women in too-short or too-tight clothes with metallic embellishments and spike heels. At Franti shows, beach balls bounce freely, but at this particular show, they bounced a few times and then lay still, much like the crowd's energy. Despite his best efforts, Michael couldn't connect with the audience.
The equipment change dragged on for too long between sets, and the excessive floor cleaning seemed unnecessary. Three guys meticulously swept the stage over and over, raising questions about a potential obsessive-compulsive behavior among the crew.
The opening had some promise with a projection onto the scrim, but the silence that followed was too prolonged. A more dramatic effect could have been achieved by swiftly opening the curtain as the clock hit "one" and promptly pulling up the scrim. Rehearsal and tighter organization are crucial for such performances.
The lighting was a major issue for many attendees, including myself, as the bright lights on the far side of the stage were blinding. The excessive brightness obscured the view of the stage, creating a chaotic and disorganized atmosphere. The lack of a cohesive theme added to the confusion, attempting to mask Gianandrea Noseda's mediocre performance.
Gianandrea should focus on his original songs, as his covers, particularly "Wade in the Water," were disappointing, loud, and messy. Quantity of musicians does not equate to a quality song.
As a seasoned 63-year-old concertgoer, I have attended numerous shows worldwide and came to see Michael Franti, whom I adore. However, the show was ultimately forgettable.
